The Origin of Das Photohound

You may be wondering why the name “Das Photo Hound” was chosen for this web site. The origin lies in a visit to Germany, not surprisingly, since the name does look a bit German. We were visiting a small town in Germany and noticed that there was a large group of young men, one of whom had a brick tied to his ankle, going from beer pub to beer pub where they were given a free beer. It turned out this was a “stag party” for the groom to be, who was, naturally the guy with the brick tied to his ankle. If it’s not obvious this was symbolic of his new wife to be. This was all interesting of course but we just continued with our visit to the town, and then we came across a similar group of young women. One of whom was pulling a wagon and who also had several dolls tied around her neck, again the symbolism is obvious. Like the men these young women were going from store to store where the bride to be received a small gift which was placed in the wagon. The women proved much better photo subjects than the men and we took to following the group around but staying back so as not to appear to be rude tourists, which we were of course. However eventually one of the girls noticed that we showed up on every corner. Getting her friends attention she pointed to us taking photos and exclaimed, “das photo hound” in a manner that said “here they are again, taking pictures”. It probably was not a complementary label but finding it hilarious we dubbed, the photographer “Das Photo Hound”, which became her name forever after. Hence the name of this web site gallery which reflects her official name in the photography world.
